Incline Barbell Bench Press — Points to Check Today
- Keep the angle at 30-45 degrees — Too upright and it becomes a shoulder exercise instead of a chest one. (Setting the bench above 60 degrees so you press with the shoulders)
- Keep your shoulder blades retracted and chest up — If your shoulders roll forward, you risk a shoulder injury. (The shoulders rising forward as you lower)
- Bring the bar to your upper chest — Lowering toward the neck or shoulders puts on heavy strain. (The bar coming down too high, toward the neck)
Incline Barbell Bench Press — How to Do It / If You're New
- Lie on a 30-45 degree incline bench and retract your shoulder blades to lock them in place.
- Grip the bar slightly wider than your shoulders, unrack it, and bring it over your upper chest.
- Lower the bar slowly to your upper chest (below the collarbone) until it lightly touches.
- Keeping your feet planted, press it up with your chest to return to the starting position.
