Sit-up

Sit-up · Beginner · Upper Abs, Lower Abs

A classic ab exercise where you lie down and sit your torso all the way up.

Beginner · Recommended Sets: 3 sets x 15-20 reps · Upper Abs, Lower Abs

Sit-up — Points to Check Today

  • Use your abs, not your neck — Pulling your head with your hands strains your neck. (Yanking the head up with interlaced fingers)
  • Round your back as you come up — Lifting with a flat, straight back turns it into a hip and lower-back exercise. (Lifting the torso up stiff and straight)
  • Lower slowly — Resisting with your abs on the way down too makes it effective. (Dropping the back with a thud and using momentum)

Sit-up — How to Do It / If You're New

  1. Lie on the floor with your knees bent and feet flat on the floor.
  2. Fold your hands across your chest or rest them lightly beside your head.
  3. Engage your abs to round your torso up.
  4. Lower your back down slowly, vertebra by vertebra, to the starting position.
